About the Film Four (2012)

Four (2012)

A Story of Connection and Hidden Truths

Four (2012) is a personal independent drama film based on events that occurred during one night in the summer. It is a story that takes place in a sleepy American town that reunites four individuals of varying perspectives and each with some undesired secrets, phobias, and desires. It is a play written by a Christopher Shinn, who won an award and perfectly transfers that stage into a film, adding the tension between the isolation and craving to connect. Instead of focusing on the boisterous antagonism or the whirlpool of action, the film lures the viewer using its emotional authenticity, subdued acting, and uncouth delving into the weak side of a person.

The Journey of Four Characters

Joe, an elderly African-American is seeking company on one of the hot summer nights, being burden by a feeling of being lonely in his own life. June, a troubled teenager, is going through her first explorations of love and her identity, not knowing who she really is and what she desires. Through this, Dex, a young man in search of the validation of an uncertain, finds himself in a scenario that compels him to deal with his inner being and suppressed desires. Abigail is a lonely teenager who spends the evening recollecting her life and attempting to figure her purpose in a sometimes remote and cold world. The ballads of their lives are delivered in an easy but strong power that brings about the emotional scenery of those individuals who only by their means are pursuing acceptance and understanding.

Emotional Impact and Cinematic Style

What is engaging about Four (2012) is that it ensures that the small, intimate moments count. Director Joshua Sanchez makes a movie which is full of silences and glances which reflect the burden of choices and frailty of human relations. The weak cinematography and gradual pace provide the viewers with the opportunity to contemplate the life and choices of the characters. Nothing is solved in the conventional sense by the end of the night but everything has changed in the lives of the four characters whose lives interconnected. The movie leaves an impression of integrity, closeness, and common human nature of being seen and heard.
